George I Silver  Taper Stick  1720

An early eigtheenth century taper stick made in London by Matthew Cooper Ist. Square base with cut corners. Hallmarked underneath with the maker's mark, lion passant, and the King's head. There is no date letter but the taper stick has been dated from the silversmith.

Tapers are thin candles. This taperstick would typically have stood on a desk and would have been used for melting sealing wax.
